Search using your own terms
Searches are not case sensitive so a search for David Dubinsky will locate the same records as searching for david dubinsky. Spelling is important. When you are unsure how to spell a word you might enter the first letters of the word to see what is found and then revise your search.
Terms used in a simple keyword search are treated as truncated letter strings so the word car will locate all records in which those letters appear consecutively, including car, cars, carry, and placard. Likewise, you may search for photographs with dates in the 1920s by entering 192.
If you wish to locate only exact matches for the keyword entered, indicate this by surrounding the word with double quotation marks. A search for "car" will retrieve only those records containing that exact word. If you are searching for more than one exact term, place double quotation marks around the individual words.
Using the operator or with 2 or more search terms will locate all the records containing at least one of the terms, such as a search for march or demonstration or crowd. This technique is also useful for terms which have irregular plural forms such as woman or women, or alternate English spellings such as labor or labour.
If more than one term is entered in the search space the system will retrieve only records containing all the terms. The operator and is not needed.
If you choose to use the Advanced Search you may select terms, collections, subjects, collectors or donors and bracketing dates. Dates must be entered in the mm/dd/yyyy format.
Search using our standardized subject headings
If browsing by subject heading locates too many extraneous images, you may wish to type that subject term in the search field along with one or more other terms to further limit records located.
